Project title: Enhancing Nutrient Placement - Sub surface application of cane specific compost

Aim:
To develop an applicator that will allow multi-row subsurface application of cane specific compost, capable of working in cultivated and zero till conditions in a controlled traffic farming system.
Objectives
- To control nutrient losses by applying cane specific compost in a subsurface application as opposed to applying on top of the soil
- To provide a healthier environment for the survival of the compost biology
- To create an enhanced environment for plant accessibility and uptake of applied nutrients
- Investigate and test application methods for improved plant access to nutrients that will improve productivity
- To improve soil health.
Project Activities:
- Investigate and develop a sub surface compost applicator in conjunction with Wayne Willis from Hodge Industries Mackay.
- Demonstrate and communicate to the local and whole sugar industry the effectiveness of a sub surface compost applicator.
- Demonstrate and communicate to the wider community and local reef catchment groups, practical subsurface application of compost.
- Develop replicated trial sites that will deliver trial results when comparing surface to sub surface application of cane specific compost. Trial sites will determine yield comparison as well as application costs, economic results will also be determined.
