Maximising Centre Pivot Efficiencies

Project Title: Maximising Centre Pivot Efficiencies

Group name: Precise Pivot Management Grower Group

Objectives:

  • Our goal is to make centre pivots even more efficient by being able to switch on and off sections of sprinklers to control which blocks are irrigated and which are to be left dry.
  • We want to use computer controllers to turn valves off in sections of the pivot as it travels over areas not to be irrigated.
  • We want to make the controller user friendly by pre-programming farm layout and having information relayed through either mobile phone or computer about pivot status
  • The new technology needs to be capable to be fitted to existing machines without the need to purchase new irrigators
  • On a BSES Rural Water Use Efficiency bus trip held in early 2007, this issue was regarded by growers as a high priority

Project Activities:

  • Purchase and install new Rainke centre pivot
  • Install valves in the pivot to allow sections to be turned off - some valves may require custom modifications
  • Set up variable speed pumping system to allow for the varying flow rate requirements
  • Contract Agtronics to develop software to allow the pivot to be programmed to automatically turn sections on and off according to predetermined farm layout
  • Programmers to install software and ensure valves are working appropriately
  • Work with programmers to enter farm layout and determine on and off sequencing. The technique used to program sprinklers will be based on the angle of the machine from a start position, which is a new concept (eg at 90° shut off certain sections)
  • Monitor pivot to ensure all sections and all valves work to specifications
  • Provide feedback to programmers regarding possible improvement/modifications to program
  • Promote new technology throughout the sugar industry
