Objectives

  • Enhance controlled traffic farming with GPS guidance in undulating conditions
  • Analyse GPS service providers and document selection of provider in a Fact Sheet for use by other cane growers and possibly other industries
  • Optimise bed shape to maximise:
    • Water infiltration
    • Legume crops
    • Minimise water run off or encourage shedding water - for different situations
    • Row spacings and controlled traffic
    • NIR results affecting cane quality and payment
    • Soil type
  • Investigate soil moisture monitoring tools to monitor water infiltration and management
  • Trialling planting techniques to maximise bed shape and determining effectiveness based on economic return:
    • Double disc opener dual row planter
    • Wide shute billet planter
    • Narrow shute whole stick planter
  • Investigate contracting facility to bed form under guidance with the CAS young farmers associations tractor
